In the North East (Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island) we say soda. For the record.

Depends on where you are. I'm from Minnesota, and I get weird looks when I call it soda. Guess I spent to much time out west as a kid.

Learned the hard way that natives of Michigan can't fathom calling it anything but "pop". After moving back here from Chicago and calling it "soda", I went into restaraunts and ordered a "diet soda", figuring it covered the Pepsi v Coke thing. Instead, I kept getting glasses of club soda. The farther north you go, the less and less they can think of sweet carbonated beverages as anything other than "pop".

well, it should be soda pop to be correct however, depending on what part of the US you live in it can be soda, pop, coke (no matter what drink you are actually getting) etc. It all boils down to local slang.

Apparently, if you live in a northern state of the USA, it is "pop" , the south calls it "soda"

It all depends on where you are from and what it is called in your household growing up. In the south - all soda drinks are called cokes no matter if it is coca cola, pepsi, sprite, etc. It's all coke.
