Lime is basic, and it counter-acts soil acidity. It takes about 1 40lb bag per thousound square feet to raise the soil PH one point.

lime is alkaline. just guessing here>> it has a ph of 8-9. lime corrects acid materials, acid soil in particular.

if your soil is ph of 5 and you add enough lime, ph of 8 you can bring the soil back to neutral 7. neutral is optimum for most plants.

it works by dilution.
