If I'm barbequeing meat (steaks, burgers, etc.) and have BBQ sauce as a necessary ingredient of the meal, then its a "barbeque."
If I'm cooking food on my grill at home (chicken, steak, burgers, hotdogs, veggies, etc.) then I would say that I'm "grilling".
If I'm at a gathering and there is varieties of food (not necessarily with BBQ sauce) then that would be a "cookout."

i would say cookout too because barbecue is only on a grill or fire, and grilling is also on grill, cookout is the best described word for cooking_out!

We always say we're having a cookout cause you can barbeque AND grill while still indoors.

I usually say Grillin. But if I have a lot of friends over then I say I am having a cookout.
