You needn't eat ketchup if you don't want to. Just rub your French fries with a tomato slice, I'm sure it's every bit as delicious.

Well, it varies depending on the brand and how you measure it. By straight weight, one national fast food chain's kethcup has 3g of sugar for 14g of ketchup (about 21%), and major bottled brands are around 24%. However, a good portion of that sugar is naturally occuring in the tomato.
Most basic recipes I've found only call for about a half a cup of extra sugar over 8 quarts of tomatos (ratio of 1:64, or about 1.5% added sugar), and the rest use a similar amount of either honey or brown sugar to balance the acidity of the tomatos and the vinegar that form the base of the ketchup.

I use a little sugar in any sauce that has tomatoes. Even a little sugar counteracts the strong citric acid of tomatoes. It's easier to digest and a whole lot less sour. Ketchup is just one example. But you wouldn't like it at all without either the sugar or some acid neutralizing herb.

I'm not quite sure what the sugar content in ketchup is. Manufacture web sites may have that info. Sugar is used to dilute the acidity of the tomato paste.

Actually if you look at a plain packet of ketchup from the UK and one from the USA, you will find that there is more sugar in the UK packet than the USA. They both have sugar yes, but the UK has more. And while I'm on the subject, Why does the UK put sugar in dill pickles??? They are supposed to be sour...not sweet!!!

It would taste a bit unpleasant and tart if they didn't . They put barbeque sauce and sugar in it to give it that distinct taste. If they didn't it would just be pasty tomato goup.
