How do I find out which taper I have in the back of my drill chuck?

morse tapers come in various sizes from 0 up to a 8 which is huge,is it a hand held or a freestanding one? go to engineer or shop they will tell you just by looking,as i would if i could see it. but alas i cannot

Most likely a 3/8. That's the most common.
