I never had this problem because I didn't allow my child to suck his thumb in the first place. I didn't want to find myself in your position. There are solutions that may help. Look in the baby section at Walgreen's and other stores. There is some sort of nasty tasting solution you can brush on the thumb. I wouldn't do the hot sauce thing. That's cruel in my opinion. A burn and tasting something nasty are too different things. It may be too traumatic to use the hot sauce.

First, I'm wondering why you already want to wean her off of her thumb at 2 years old. Is she always sucking her thumb? Does she use it for more than just to soothe herself and get herself to sleep? If you would answer that she sucks her thumb all the time, then perhaps you are right to consider weaning her off of it. But the important point is weaning, similar to what you probably did when you started her on solid foods. Most children suck their thumbs as a way of soothing themselves. Thinking about other ways your child might be able to sooth herself along with perhaps using some traditional product to discourage her from enjoying the taste of her thumb in her mouth would likely be a good option for you. Additionally, there is no reason why you can't talk to your daughter regarding how she's getting older and perhaps doesn't need to always suck her thumb. Encourage her use of words to describe how she's feeling. Consider using breathing techniques (there are some really simple ones for kids) as another way for her to deal with stressful situations. These are just some suggestion. Your pediatrician/family physician would also be a wonderful resource I'd encourage you to talk to if you are really concerned about her thumb-sucking.

Hot sauce? Are these people crazy?

A 2 year old sucking isn't a problem. I wouldn't worry about it for a while. You can always ask your Dr about steps to take the thumb away--probably similare to taking away a pacifier.

My son did that until he was over 2 yrs old and I was to my limit with it also because it can mess up their teeth. I found some stuff at the drug store, and I think it's called "thumb." It comes in a small bottle with a little brush in it-kind of like a fingernail polish bottle, but smaller. Go to the drug store and ask them if they have it or have heard of it. It worked for my son and I never had trouble again. Oh, and it's very affordable! Just a couple of dollars.

Give your 2 year old something else to suck on. Like Ice Cream pop or something. Or Eventually she will grow out of it. Its better then her sucking a bottle.

My niece and nephew (twins) suck their thumbs still, and they are 4. They have caluses on their thumbs from sucking so much. It's hard to do, because it's their security.
