A dragon and knight live on an island. This island has seven poisoned wells, numbered 1 to 7. If you drink from a well, you can only save yourself by drinking from a higher numbered well. Well 7 is located at the top of a high mountain, so only the dragon can reach it.

One day they decide that the island isn't big enough for the two of them, and they have a duel. Each of them brings a glass of water to the duel, they exchange glasses, and drink. After the duel, the knight lives and the dragon dies.

Why did the knight live? Why did the dragon die?

The knight lived because he drank water from one of the wells 1-5, knowing that the dragon would most likely bring water from well 7 since there isn't any number higher. When he drank from the glass that the dragon gave him, it nuetralized the poison that he drank earlier.

The dragon died because the knight brought water that didn't come from one of the poisoned wells. Not knowing this, the dragon drank from one of the poisoned wells later, most probably 7, then died from it.

Because the knight didn't bring water from any of the wells, he brought fresh water. Therefore when the Dragon drank from well 7 for a cure he was in fact poisoning himself as there was no higher well to drink from. Also the knight must have drank from one of the lower wells before hand, knowing that the dragon would bring him water from 7!

When they exchanged glases the dragon gave him the one from well 7, and since the dragon cannot count it doesn't know which well's safest.

The knight had cleverly developed an immunity to iocane powder. Therefore, he clearly could not choose the glass in front of him!
