As for public speaking. MANY people have this phobia. It is the most common phobia out there.
Getting over a phobia is easier if there is some motivation that means a lot to you in order to do it. example: I had a phobia about bees until my 3 year old was trapped in a hornets nest. I did not even think about the phobia when it meant saving his life. I still don't like bees, but I'm not as terrified of them now as I was before that.

I never went to the dentist for about 15 years, I guess it was also a phobia. Then the pain really started early this year, booked myself in to see a dentist (heart pounding like crazy) so far i've had 3 molars out and 6 fillings, and guess what ...........no pain.
I think pain was the main reason for my phobia, now is the bloody cost.

I also have a phobia of dentist and I didn't go for 14 years - by this time my teeth were SO bad I had to have 16 fillings!!!
so now I realise that I have to go every 6 months
but it worked for me by looking until I found a great guy and he is so gentle and actually cares and takes his time that I actually look forward (well almost) to go now.
About public speaking - practise in front of the mirror - sounds silly but it works - write down what you have to say and keep practising - then do it in front of a couple of close friends who will tell you how you are doing..... then practise again

From what I understand, you just have to face it. So, if you have a phobia of going to the dentist, then you have to go to the dentist. It sounds simple, but it ain't that easy, I know. I have a phobia of driving over huge bridges over large bodies of water. To overcome it, I'd have to go back and forth over one. I think I can do it until I seriously think about actually doing it.

In general you need to face your fears head-on. For public speaking don't look into their eyes, look over the top of heads of the audience, it's less intimidating that way....and it really works.
For the dentist....the more you go the less fearful it will be. Start slow and get your teeth cleaned every six months, that way it is less traumatic. Also, tell the hygienist upfront that you are fearful, they will work to make the experience more pleasant.

You overcome them by dealing with them. For public speaking, you could take a class, and put yourself in that kind of situation. The more you do it, the easier it will be. As for going to the dentist, it's not usually as bad as you think, and if it is, just remind yourself that when it's all over, you'll still be alive and fine. And do that regularly also. To lessen your fear, and to take care of yourself.

you may never see the people you talk to again, so they can't judge you, and if they do - what's the worst that can happen?
plus dentists are people too - tell them about your phobia, and i'm sure they'll be very understanding

First, you need to find a way of relaxing... Then little by little you put yourself in the situation that you fear... Maybe first imagining the situation... Then maybe speaking by yourself or in the mirror... Then maybe in front of one or two people... All the while trying to stay calm and relaxed...
Take baby steps, the way one goes into a cold swimming pool. Don't just dive into the cold water. Let yourself get used to it little by little...

i hate public speaking and its a requirement of my course. i just go 4 it and try to get through it as best i can.after all,everyone else in the group has to do it.then i have a laugh with my mates after about how stupid i felt
