Starting salary at American , If they were hiring, is roughly $12k /year ($19.65/hr, before many deductions, like union dues, uniform pruchase, contribution to medical and dental plans, pre funding retirement benefits, as well as the usual taxes )
my guess that UAL and Continental would be a little higher, as much as $15k.
By LAW (F.A.R.'S)you are limited in the number of hours you can fly in a day ,or week. (14 hours flying/day, must have one 24 hour period off in 7 days)
Also you are paid ONLY while the plane is not at the gate. your first hour of work each day is not paid. The clock starts ticking when the airplane brakes are released.
So you can easily work a 15 hour day and be paid only 8 hours.

Before you start thinking money there are a few things you should know. First it is hard to get on with a major US carrier right away. Usually you have to start with one of their regional carriers like Continental Express Jet or United Express. Training is 3 weeks unpaid, then you are on call for the first year and take whatever you can get when you bid your trips. The first year, you wont make much, if anything at all. It takes time and to earn senority and get the segments and the money.

While they do not require weigh in's before your trips anymore, body size is still important. Your weight has to be perportionate to your height.

While they do not post current wages, you can expect about $20k for the first year or so if you're lucky and can get that many flights.

Good luck!!!
