I think wide body jets have a great impact. The ability to transport hundreds of people around the world is incredible. The new 777 long range can go from Singapore to London via the Pacific/Atlantic. The new Airbus will be great too, but most airports are slow to adopt new boarding facilites

Especially for developing nations with large populations such as INdia and Chine the new widebodies will have a big impact, because costs per seatmile goes down with the new planes - and so will the tickets do with increased competition in those countries, allowing more people to be able to fly.

It is much cheaper to fly 1 Boeing 747 holding 500 passengers than it is to fly 2 Boeing 757s holding 250 passengers each. Widebodies allows airlines to fly more people for a cheaper overall price.
