It's $1 for a few days of hope for something better. I like to get a lottery ticket and not check it for weeks, so that when I'm bummed out I can think, "This is going to be really funny if it turns out I'm already a millionaire!" Besides, it's not at all impossible to win, just not very likely!

They play for exactly the same reason you stated - "almost impossible". People who play the lottery are playing on the very small off-chance that they're numbers will be the ones picked, and will then come into some very easy money.

People know the odds are long in the lottery, but someone has to win. It only takes one dollar to play, and it only takes one ticket to win. A lottery win can set you up for life, but you cannot win if you don't play.

Obviously you don't gamble FreedomLover, you also have obvious issues with gambling in general. I support your right to have these opinions, but I draw the line at being called lazy by you. I work very hard for my money and I will spend it however I like.

Because "almost impossible" does not mean "impossible". You can't win if you don't play. Lottery tickets cost $1 apiece, and that's certainly not too high a price to pay for your chance at winning millions. Granted the odds are astronomically against you, but it's always fun to fantasize.

I play because someone has to win and it can't be me if I don't play. Also, around here the lottery proceeds go to charity so I look at my measly 3 bucks a week as a charitable donation. It's fun to dream.

I don't agree with people spending more than they can afford on lotteries, that's an addiction.

All gambling is done because the people who do it are Lazy and Greedy. These are common negative parts of people and the whole gambling industry is built upon taking advantage of peoples weakness in these areas. We have had the lottery here in Nebraska for years. I figure I am 'up' at least a couple grand by NOT playing!

They have a mentallity that "I have a better chance of winning if I play than I do if I don't play." Plus, you hear about people winning the lottery, and they want to be part of that group.

Also, there are times when people do win, so they want to keep playing in hopes that they continue to win.

Hope and luck come to mind. Plus, the fact that as humans we all want and hope secretly that we could be the one!

It's more likely you will be hit be lightening than winning a lottery !

Most of the money from the lottery goes to a school fund. I play to support the kids. . . and hopefully line my pockets.

I've always said that the lottery is a special tax for people who are bad at math...
