There is an old saying among martial artists: There is no "best" martial art, there is only "good" and "bad". If the instruction is sincere, it will meet your simple goals for beginning your study and take you places you didn't even realize you wanted to go, expanding your perceptions immeasurably. Find a learning environment in which you feel comfortable in class makeup and instructing style by visiting facilities convenient to you and watch the classes. Any reputable instructor will welcome this and be happy to answer your concerns. Schools teaching various Karate and Tae Kwon Do styles are the most common in many localities and a basic grasp of the arts can be seen in a matter of months, although the rest of one's life can be spent pursuing true mastery. Aikido is a facinating and powerful art, but as such for some students requires many years of dedication to show progress.
I wish you well in your journey.

If you are looking for self-defense application then your best bet is to find a style that is well rounded. I practice a hard form of aikido that incorporates jiu-jitsu, judo, and karate so that any form of an attack I am approached with I have a strong foundation of defense to utilize.
All martial arts have their place, but don't get caught up on which is the best. If you train enough you will realize that technique is technique. What works on one person will not work necessarily on another. For proof of how all styles are connected just grab a jiu-jitsu book, and an aikido book...WOW!!! an arm bar standing up is an arm bar on the ground!!! Or another proof, how many different style of karate, kung-fu, aikido, jiu-jitsu, judo, ect. are there? It doesn't matter, their principles are all the same. Clear your mind of mechanical barriers and the principles of the martial arts opens.
Always remember!!! Move First. Technique Second.

There are many forms of martial arts because there are so many personalities in people. The best form of martial arts is the one that matches your personality. If you're an extrovert you may like tae kwon do or kung fu. If you are an introvert you may like tai chi.
There hard form and soft form of martial arts. Some stress weapons others stress acrobatic moves. Others still stress internal strength and power.
All forms take many many years of dedication and practice to be proficient at it. It takes a life time to learn and master.
From all the training, knowledge and benefits gained from martial arts you will realize your greatest opponent is your inner self.

there is no one best art. The best thing to do is to study two martial arts that are very different from each other.
I like Karate and Aikido.

to tell the truth.........there is no such thing as the best martial arts.......
but if you really insist the martial arts is the one that incorporates all.....know what i mean???
it must incorporate punching kicking and grappling training to be a complete fighter....
well when you say grappling for me its not the jujitsu stuff its more on clinching and then punch kick or knee....
so mixed martial art would be the best of all.....
