It depends on the teacher, and you do get kids as young as 3 playing the piano, but be realistic. If you are talking about a real piano, then how do you expect a tiny child to be able to cope with the size of the keys and the distances between them. I started when I was seven and I think that was just right as I wouldn't have coped any earlier with the actual playing or with the teaching, concentration and practice required.

The panio is a very difficult weapon to master. Even teenagers tend to have problems with the spring-loaded blades. If I am not mistaken, the Panio is only used by members of the military in South America. I suggest you wait until you son is at least 18 before you try to get him to use the panio.

My mother-in-law-teaches lessons and I knew a girl when I was little, who was an excellent pianist. i think you can start lessons as soon as you are wanting to. I think even 4 or five years old is appropriate. I will admit that I have never seen, my mother in-law teach anyone lately who was that young. But the girl I was talking about was like a professional when she was in the 6th grade. So I know she played so well as she won many talent shows since she was in 3rd and fourth grade. Plus after her mom took her several times to get lessons from the college about an hour away--and I believe that really helped her. It is best to learn the piano when you are young so that you can practice and really take it all in. You can focus on that and if you like it, then you can keep it up as you get older. Find a good teacher--try a few out to see which one goes best with your personality and goals even. Plus music increases discipline and supposedly students who play music do better in their other school subjects. I hope that you or your family member starts early. I took lessons when I was younger, but did not keep with it and then I took some when I was older. I still know the basics and I am glad that I can play a little. It is worth it.

I would start him off at about age 6 or 7 at the earliest. If your son does not show any interest after exposing him to it, I wouldn't force him to play. I am a piano teacher and band director at a public school.

make sure the kid can put their fingers on at least 3 keys squarely, and they can sit still for 1/2 hour at a time, without being distracted.
