Manicotti, otherwise known outside the United States as cannelloni, is the name for a large, tubular form of pasta, generally 3-4 inches in length and one inch in diameter. The term also refers to the finished dish made from the pasta tube which is boiled and stuffed with ricotta cheese or meat, then covered with tomato sauce.
So in Italy they call it Cannelloni.

It used to be here in the states or most places here that Manicotti was the filled pasta tubes, Canelloni was rolled sheets of pasta filled with something (think lasanga sheets with filling spread on them then rolled). Now it's pretty much common that was wrong and they are mostly the same, it's known as manicotti in the states and canelloni in Italy, both tubes of pasta but with canelloni actually it's smooth while manicotti has grooves. You can use one for the other it really doesn't matter.

in italy, relatively similar pasta is sometimes called differently in different regions, that might be what it comes from.
