The purpose of trimming hair every six weeks or so is to prevent it from splitting. The ends of your hair will eventually split because; it’s the oldest hair on your head and it is far weaker than the hair a few inches from your scalp.
The good news is; if you trim your hair before it splits, you can determine how much you’ll loose. Besides, the average head of hair grows about a half an inch per month. If you have breakage and split ends, you will not see growth because your hair will break faster than it grows.
Another factor that determines the growth rate of hair is the overall health of the individual. Your hair is nourished by your blood stream. If you eat well, your hair will get adequate oxygen via the blood stream and be healthy. Remember: healthy hair involves a number of things, trimming is one of them

You definetly need to have it trimmed. For 2 reason, to eliminate the split ends and get to the healthy hair and it will also grow better if you trim a little bit every 6wks. After you trim your hair when you condition in the shower, get a lg. toothed comb and comb the conditioner through before you rinse. It will also help if you don't iron your hair more than 3 times per week.

If you dont trim your hair the split ends will just keep opening apart along the hair shaft and eventually end up breaking everytime you brush it. Just trim like an inch or even further if you see the split ends are higher. Dont worry your hair wil grow fast enough to get to the length you have it now.

Trim a little bit at a time, let it grow out and trim again. Don't cut it all at once- you'll be upset with the results because it will be too short. Just take really good care of it with a fortifying conditioner and wait for it to grow back each time before you trim more. Eventually you'll be split end free.

Yes, trimming the hair stops the split ends from splitting the hair higher up, it will look & feel healthier and make sure you use something on your hair when you iron it , that protects it from the heat.
Hope this helps !

Split ends continue on splitting until the strand can no longer be split.
Sound hairdressing advice is to cut/trim your hair. That is the only way to get healthy looking hair.

Creams can temporarily make your hair look healthier, but the only way to fix split ends is to cut them off. To prevent future split ends don't wash your hair every day, wet hair is more easily damaged(also don't comb or brush wet hair if you can avoid it). Use a moisturizing shampoo and intensive conditioner. The heat and dryness from blow drying your hair can cause damage. Don't die or perm your hair or use styling products that contain alcohol. Curling irons, straighteners and other heated styling utensils are not good for your hair so don't use them or use them only occasionally.
Taking a multi-vitamin and a good balanced diet will help hair grow stronger and sometimes faster, but these result won't be seen for awhile, because hair grows so slow.

Trimming is the ONLY way to get rid of split ends. And while you're at the salon, ask the hairstylist how to reduce the number of split ends - I'd bet that the ironing is probably the main culprit.

Trimming your hair will cut out many of the split ends and make your hair healthier as well as looking smoother and shinier. You should do that regularly, even if you don't want it cut much. And don't use curling irons or straightening irons too often - they will dry out your hair and cause more split ends.

I have extremely dry hair, so I get split ends very easily. What has helped me over the years is making sure I get my hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks. Additionally, using silicone based hair products helps protect the cuticle from split ends. Also, instead of leave in conditioner, I put normal conditioner in (about the size of a quarter) to help with my dry hair. The drier your hair is, the more likely it will split. I checked with my hairdresser, and she said with my hair texture, leaving regular conditioner in has definetly helped. Hope this helps.
