It really depends what you are using the O/S for. At work we have several database servers that run on LINUX and in my experience it is much more reliable than Windows for this particular purpose. On the other the hand the software that can run on LINUX is a little limited. Also, most people are more familiar with the Windows front end rather than LINUX.

this is a trick question right? best on what? well windows is popular and is the dominant OS in the market most of the pc come out with windows but linux has a lot of functionality that windows can't do. i'd say windows is convenient and easier to use while linux is a bit complex but flexible so depending on what you need that's where you'll decide

That depends which Linux you are taking into consideration. There are so many versions - like Ubuntu or Debian (these two are free for example - but there are other ones that you must buy !) - and one choice when it comes to Windows XP.
Do consider that many modern applications are not cross-platform compatible, and although you will find ones that work on Linux (Mozilla Firefox, Open Office and many others) some will become unaccesible (though any company that respects itself will release a version to suit your needs).
Last observation: do you insist on a free-of-charge OS? Then yes, choose Linux.
Good luck!

Put it this way, if Linux was even half decent, Micro$not would've bought them out by now, the same way they do anything that poses a threat.
The only people who use Linux are those too stupid to realise they have no control over what their computer does, or think that they can actually change the course of the technological future.

when it comes down to it, you use the best tool for the task at hand. if you want web email and toys use windows, if you want the ability to customize everything down to the last dot (naturally after several years of testing and learning) then go linux. The linux learning curve is insane at times..

Depends what you need
Microsoft has the familiarity and user interface advantage
And better software support
LINUX (depending on version) has a number of advantages such as running better on lower spec'd machines. (some versions)
Is normally free or at least cheaper than windows
If you are just looking for a basic os thats free to use, for creating/reading documents, email and browsing the web then try
http://ubuntuguide.com
If yoiu want to play video games - Windows XP - no argument
If you want something pretty and reliable get a Mac (presuming money is no object)
