There has been a lot of discussion going on about illegal immigrants, and opinions about them vary greatly. However, I want to ask American people about their views on LEGAL immigrants. There's plenty of people in the US who are coming legally and staying legally (applying for green cards etc). They also take jobs, usually better ones than the illegal folks. How do you feel about them? I believe, many will say that America was made by immigrants, but times change, so maybe you feel it needs to stop?

I mean LEGAL, LEGAL! Please read the question, I am not asking about ILLEGAL immigrants. I'm asking about LEGAL ones, who come LEGALLY, find jobs, pay taxes etc.

I'm OK with it. Why shouldn't they have a shot at the American way of life just like my grandparents and great grandparents did? I think the whole argument of there's not enough room, etc. is just an excuse.

If you are a legal immigrant, and come to this country for a better life you should first learn to speak the language then get a job, and work hard for the things you want. I have no problem with any nationality coming to America Legally. None of us should have a problem with legal. Besides, the American Indian is the only true American so the rest of us are from immigrants looking for a better life.

Just what kind of American do you want? Only the one's born here can hold the best jobs?
And please explain what you mean by times have changed? You mean we don't want productive, hard working legal immigrants taking our jobs, that is NOT what America is all about. It is suppose to be about equality and free market.
If a legal immigrant gets a better job then a citizen, MORE POWER to him/her. It sounds to me you are against any immigration.
If an immigrant beats me out of a job, shame on me, for not being smart enough, for having all the opportunity here and not taking advantage of it!
That's what democracy and capitalism is all about. Why don't you take a course in how our system of democracy works and get a clue, lady....

My parents are legal immigrants to the U.S, so I think they are great. THEY are the ones that bring vitality and diversity to the U.S, not the illegals. They waited their turn because they truly wanted to be here. My parents speak great English. My mom works actively in her community and my father owns a small computer/electronic repair store and employs a few other Americans there. America may be a nation of immigrants, but it is moreso a nation of laws, and following those laws is what makes our country great. I will say that maybe we should temporarily reduce legal immigration to give the legal people who have not assimilated time to do so, and to give ourselves time to sort out the illegal/border security mess.

No problem with legal immigrants. They should learn English though mainly as a safety concern. There is no guarantee that if they get into trouble that the person who comes to help will speak their language. I am a paramedic now and in my career I have had Hispanics (more out there than just Mexicans), Germans, Belgians, Koreans, Japanese, and one person from Africa that spoke that click language. A communication break down makes treating them very difficult.
For those who are wondering, we will treat them if we don't understand them and try to find an interpreter as fast as possible. You would be surprised how well hand signals work.

America is all about freedom....if someone wants to come over from a different country and follow the rules (become legal, obey laws, pay taxes) then they should by all means be here. At this point, they are no longer immigrants, they are citizens who deserve the same respect as a natural born citizen, provided they give the same respect.

i think, ppl must have same rights for everybody, respecting each others culture. For example, those legal immigrants who stays there its because they want the best for them that prolly in the country they cant get it. As long they pay same taxes, they learn English,. i think they have rights to stay there. Why ppl who are against immigrants in the USA don't ever think about How they would feel when they go to (for exam) Mexico, Caribbean or whatever... and do the persons who live in this country push it back instead of treating them with happiness and enthusiasm for coming to his country? answer me this back ...

If someone is here LEGALLY then I have no problem with them. I've dated a few who are here from other countries. The ones that I have the problem with are those who break the law by coming into our country and then break even more laws using falsified ID and information and sponge off the resources and benefits that are for our citizens and those here legally. Like I said I have no problems with someone who is here legally.

I'm so encouraged by the answers to this so far! Legal immigration brings another law abiding citizen into our economy and our company. Illegal immigration just brings in another criminal.

Congratulations to those who've managed to wade through the immigration process and become legal residents. My personal concern is their "assimilation" process. Learning our national language is the one common thread we share. What language you speak in your home or local community gathering areas is truly none of my business. However, when you enter into the "public", "common" areas, I truly think it's vital to communicate in reading, writing, and speaking in one language-our national language is English. If you've become a legal resident, you have made the decision that this is more for you than just a "vacation" spot, so respect yourself and your opinions and be able to communicate with us all. Imagine being able to represent your culture to us all in a language we would all understand.
