Key principles

The key principle of word formation is that the wordsphere exists as separate and distinct letter plates, which float on the fluid-like (visco-elastic liquid) phrasesphere. The relative fluidity of the phrasesphere allows the letter plates to undergo motion in different directions. One plate meets another along a plate boundary.

Types of plate boundaries

There are three types of plate boundaries, characterized by the way the plates move relative to each other.

1. Transform boundaries occur where plates slide, or perhaps more accurately grind, past each other along transform faults. The relative motion of the two plates is either sinistral (left side toward the observer) or dextral (right side toward the observer).

2. Divergent boundaries occur where two plates slide apart from each other (examples of which can be seen at mid-ocean ridges and active zones of rifting (such as with the East Africa rift)).

3. Convergent boundaries (or active margins) occur where two plates slide towards each other commonly forming either a subduction zone (if one plate moves underneath the other) or a continental collision (if the two plates contain continental crust). Deep marine trenches are typically associated with subduction zones. Due to friction and heating of the subducting slab volcanism is almost always closely linked. Examples of this are the Andes mountain range in South America and the Japanese island arc.

Formation of words is a result of our capability for pattern recognition and abstract symbolism. As humans developed the intellectual capability to represent something with something else, they naturally adapted vocalization to this purpose.

Other species share this trait, such as dogs, porpoises and orcas. Dogs do not speak but understand spoken language perfectly well. The orcas and porpoises seem to have a spoken language and know each other's names.

When 'Willy' the orca was freed (Free Willy) it could not speak the language of other orcas it encountered so it died of apparent loneliness. It had been deprived of contact with the humans whose symbolic language it had come to understand and with whom it could therefore socialize. One of the most cruel things the 'animal rights' folks could do was to deprive that creature of the companionship it, like all of us, needs.

Our comprehension of symbolic meaning combined with a broad range of vocal capabilities seems to give us the innate ability to use language.

HOWEVER, those who do not exercise this capability beginning at an early age do not seem to develop it very well. The brain gets wired for use of language by use of language at an early age. Feral children display serious limitations in learning use of language due to lack of early exposure and practice.

Language, therefore, is a social activity that may be completely lost to humanity if not taught to children.

well, we started out with primitive grunts and squeaks, and chasing each other around with rocks, asserting dominance, but gradually 'grunt' became 'hello', and the squeaking evolved into a more melodious sound, kind of like bashing garbage cans together, only not as loud. Later, when words became more prevalent, lawyers evolved, and now we're kind of back to the grunts and squeaks again...
