The thermos doesn't seal well enough to hold pressuized liquids, so if you put a carbonated beverage in one, it wil leak.

Carbonated beverages release bubbles as you pour them. The bubbles come from carbon dioxide that was dissolved in the liquid in the bottling process and kept there under pressure inside the bottle or can. When you open the container, you release the pressure, and the gas can no longer be kept dissolved inside the liquid, so bubbles form. Even thought it's an invisible gas, Carbon dioxide takes up space, so after you pour it in the thermos, the pressure increases. A thermos isn't designed for that. It's the same reason a champagne cork blows off explosively: once you begin to release the pressure, the loosened cork can't maintain the dissolved carbon dioxide anymore ,and voom! Out shoots the cork.

I highly doubt that the lid will blow off, but I guess I can't say for sure. Does your thermos have a drinking spout on it? If so, I would imagine that the reason they say not to put carbonated beverages inside your thermos, is the same reason why I no longer put carbonated beverages inside my son's sippie cups: when you take a sip, the bubbles or something causes a pressure to build, and as soon as you take your lips off of it- it erupts! Pop (or whatever carbonated beverage you have inside) will spurt out for several seconds. Trust me on this, don't put carbonated beverages inside your thermos unless you intend to pour the liquid back out and not suck it out, otherwise you'll be wearing it. ;)

Because if you put a carbonated beverage inside of your Starbucks thermos it will not be a Starbucks beverage! It's a marketing scheme. I'm sure you could put a carbonated beverage inside of it if you wanted to.

Most thermos's have a glass liner for insulation. If you seal the thermos with a carbonated liquid inside the pressure would most likely break the glass liner. And or cause the top to come off with considerable force.

Because if you put a carbonated beverage inside the top can forcefully blow off. I'm not kidding. They are just covering their butts in case someone decides to put soda in it and they get hurt.

Carbonated beverages will create pressure. This can make your thermos crack or explode. Yep, really!
