I think the overall configuration of airplanes will be different. They will look a little different. Some will be flying wings (without a fuselage), others may consist of more than one fuselage on the same set of wings. But there won't be anything too radical because airlines simply won't buy anything too radical from airline manufacturers.

When it is all said and done, I'll bet that flying on the airlines in the future will be surprisingly similar to what it is today. There is no cheap way to make an airplane go supersonic. There is no cheap way to go into orbit or sub-orbit. I'll bet that in 70 years most, if not all commercial airlines will still be flying subsonic the way they are today.

Hopefully by then there will be an aviation strain of biodiesel because if not, planet Earth will probably be completely out of petroleum. Humans are a consumer and waste oriented species and while some people can deny it all they want, the fact is, we only have a limited amount of natural resources. Hopefully by then we will have adapted to different types of earth-friendly fuels that are available in vast quantities. As an engineer and pilot, I have several ideas.

basically looking toward a parabolic flight pattern. In other words taking off in NYC to Tokyo, will be almost a 1 hour trip. the plane will lift off, fly to the end of the earths atmosphere, using the earths rotation and at a particular time, come back down.

I hope before that time we can go to the moon like we go anywhere. I won't be around in 70 years time though, more than likely...
