Seriously, I would like one good reason why a person would choose to do something that would make them a target for hate crimes, have less rights than a straight person, be ridiculed, hated, blamed for disease, etc... Why would someone CHOOSE that? FTR, I don't believe it's a choice, but for those that do, please answer...

It amazed me how few people seemed to understand this question.
She is asking why do YOU think it's a choice. She stated, I thought clearly, that she didn't. Do you also like to read books except for the last ten pages?
Why would someone choose to be or do something with the potential of so many negative consequences? The answer's obvious - they wouldn't. So it must not be by choice. Simple. Like most of you who answered this question without reading it through.

The status of gays has improved greatly over the past twenty years for your information. It is a slow process, just look at racial discrimination and how long that has taken us to get where we are.
I believe that homosexuality can be either nature, nurture or choice. Some people are born with that predisposition, some it comes from environmental factors and for some---they simply DO choose it. You need to do a little more research on this. There are gay people themselves that have come out on this stating exactly what I have said above.
This appears as if you are merely looking for a fight rather than realistically trying to understand an opposing view.

Why would a person choose to be an alcoholic?
Why would a woman NOT leave an abusive husband?
Why would a person stay on welfare instead of try to improve their life?
The point of your question seems obvious, that you don't think being gay is a choice. So how do you answer these questions, and why is that any different? Who would choose to live a life of poverty or abuse or drunkenness in a country where they have freedom to go anywhere, to get any job, to marry anyone (well, almost), to get treatment for addiction? These are complex problems, like homosexuality, that don't have simple or obvious answers.

People do not choose to be gay. This is feelings and preferences that they are born with. Whether they choose to make it public or not is their personal choice. Its just too bad that they are not socially excepted. The bible does state that this is wrong but do you know how many people have committed suicide because they were gay and feared of not being accepted, or feared of being the target of a hate crime. I know of two personally. I am heterosexual and married with kids. I have an open mind and a lot of gay and lesbian friends. It does not bother me in the least. They know my preference and respect it. If it was more understood and socially accepted by people with open minds there would be a lot less hatred and bashing in the world.

>>> would like one good reason why a person would choose to do something that would make them a target for hate crimes, have less rights than a straight person, be ridiculed, hated,<<<
What are you talking about? The idea that gay people are this incessantly and frequently persecuted targeted group for all sorts of hate crimes and discrimination is a MYTH.
Hate crimes against gays are statistically rare in this country.
As for discrimination ... WHAT discrimination???
Gays have a higher median income than the general population.
They occupy a higher percentage of professional high-paying jobs (per capita) than the overall population.
And since very few of them support families or kids, virtually all of that higher-than-average income is DISPOSABLE income.
Gays are more likely than the population at large to hold college degrees, as well as advanced degrees such as masters' and doctorates.
And gays, per capita, travel abroad on foreign vacations much more frequently than the population at large.
In light of all the above facts, can you please explain to me where all this supposed discrimination and ill treatment is???

I have heard this argument many times before. I am a gay civil rights advocate and a member of many GLBT groups. But i have also heard lesbians say they chose it for political reasons. And i have known people so desperate to fit into a group they would feign gay, and/or actually practice it just to fit into a gay group. Young people will do a lot to fit into a group. If they happen to be in a group of gays i think they might try to fit in.
Most people are somewhat bisexual so it's not that difficult.
I personally feel that the time for this particular argument (trying to help people understand that being gay isn't a choice by explaining no one would choose to be ostracized) is obsolete.
I mean it's hard being black but would you ever try to say that no one would choose to be black? Black folks will tell you they would choose it again and again. Gay pride will help us understand that we would choose to be gay again also.
I think you should update your persuasion tactics to help heterosexuals understand that gays don't have a choice. I personally think that the best way is to help heteros understand that THEY didn't have a choice. Help them see that their orientation was strong and involuntary.

I don't think people choose to be gay, but I think some of them just had one to many BS experiences with women( or for the women, men) that if they're lets say on the fence that pushes them
off. Maybe it's the people who are hating and ridiculing or ostrasizing
and generally getting all bent out of shape about it are the ones who
are the problem.

That's why i don't think they CHOOSE to be gay. You can't help it when you see someone your attracted to whether they be opposite sex or the same sex as you. There isn't anything wrong with being gay. It's just that people think that they know what's normal and reject things that aren't like them. It's human nature. We shouldn't ridicule or judge people that are different from us. If we were true christians we wouldn't judge them at all. and besides what would the world be like if we didn't have gay people..boring! I luv my gay friends!

Being gay can be a choice (very rare, but usually in transsexuals) but it is normally biological and cannot be controlled. It can be confined and hidden, but never actually removed. I've gotten into plenty of debates over this, and whenever a homosexual has chimed in, they've always said that they never made a decision to be gay, they just never found themselves attracted to the opposite sex, but rather the same.

Personal choice and liberty is what defines a person in his/her state of sexuality. Why choose? Because they want too. FTR I agree with you if a person wants to live a certain type of life style who am I to infringe on them.
However the choices they make should not infringe on me either. Besides it is up to them and God ultimately.
End.

If you don't believe it is a choice, why are you asking the question?
I don't think any gay person feels it is a choice either.
So the only people that could answer are those that aren't gay...therefore, making your question and the answers to it, invalid.
