Quality dogs are expensive to buy and raise. The breeder has to pay for a stud fee, health exams and tests for canine VD. Because of their big heads, Chihuahua pups often have to be delivered by an expensive c-section. The pups then need food and shots and worming and lots of care for eight weeks. One of my breeder friends once calculated that she made less than $1.85 per hour after expenses!

All dogs cost money to take care of. A good pup can cost $1000 or more. Puppy shots are another $200, then $100 a year. Annual Heartworm test and preventative medication $100. Professional trainer $600 and up. Going on vacation? Boarding kennel $40/day. Spaying? $250. If you can't afford to pay for a good dog, maybe you can't afford to maintain one either?

Dogs are terrific companions but they require training and discipline and exercise. A dog the size of a Chihuahua has to go out every four to six hours - the smaller the dog, the more often they have to go out. Chihuahuas live 14 -17 years. Paying $1200 for a pup means that the dog cost you less than $100 a year - is that really too much???

Chihuahuas can be great dogs, but they can also be yappy, nippy, dominant little horrors that never get housebroken. If the dog bites someone, you could be sued. You need to let them walk on all fours and train them just like any other dog.

If you can't afford a dog, get a rabbit or a guinea pig - they're friendly, easy to keep, live in a cage, and don't have to be walked or trained.

Talk to breeders, if you don't then you wont know the health history of the dogs family and they could only be with you a few short years rather than their whole life. This has happened to me before so I higky reccommend breeders, of course research them, dont go with anyone that overbreeds and has puppy mill type of situations, as they dont guarantee good blood lines. I got my pup from a family of champions and i'd do the same in the future. Just remember the old saying you get what you pay for, and the heartache of getting a pup free or cheap is worse than saving the money,

Go to the humane society... a lot of times they give them away. I have a 75% or more Chihuahua and I didn't pay anything for it. Maybe you're okay with getting a mix? They are normally healthier and cost nothing most the time!

Look on the net for chihuahua rescue organizations, they're out there. You may have to pay for the adoption and spaying/neutering, but it's lots cheaper than private sales. Also, you'll be giving a shelter dog a home.

Local humane society. If is not uncommon for them to have pure breeds. If they know you're looking for one, they will notify you when one comes in.
Talk to your local vet. They know breeders, and have clients that for some reason or the other need to give up a pet.
And, there is also PETFINDERS.com. They have listings from rescue groups and local pounds who have beatiful animals who need loving homes. Although rescue groups are not cheap. They make sure the animal is in good health, and take time to evaluate the pets' disposition. That does take time and money, but they are a great resource.

Go to your local pound. They may have one in there in need of a good home. The fees to adopt a dog at the pound are usually WAY lower.
