All teachers, wise men, and founders of religions promote wisdom and decency, and various ways of dealing with the life of the world and the inner life - or spirit, as some have it.
Jesus did not found a religion. He was a teacher, a guide - one interpretation says he was visionary enough to realize how Roman imperial will would finally destroy the Hebrew nation of Palestine and that he sought ways to extend the best of Judaism to all persons. Christianity was created by Jesus' followers, and THEIR followers. THESE are some of the people who claim Christ is a "savior" and that hell awaits" anyone who disagrees with them.
Jesus himself only had two rules - love God, and love your fellow man. He didn't issue any rules about churches or ladies wearing headscarves or forbidden foods or anything else. All these people running around claiming they know the truth and offering a huge list of rules the claim are inspired just make a mess of things. And since most of them hate more people than they love, they are not following their claimed leader's laws.
So anyone who is genuinely kindhearted, generous, loving, forgiving and so forth is following the only laws Jesus handed down. These people don't even need to have heard of Jesus to live the good life he described - they could be Musim, pagan, or just plain natural beings. And probably living a much more decent and humane existence than the pinch-nosed, narrow-hearted "Christians".

I would suggest you find a Church and start attending so that you can really get fully detailed answers you are seeking. Morpheus is off base, not all mainstream Christianity discounts evolution.
Mainstream Christianity does teach that it is not enough to 'just be good' or we would not have needed a savior. It would be good for you to research why Christianity believes a savior of the world was necessary---based on original sin and the events of the garden and how we are continually feeling those effects in socitey today.
A nice book to read is CS Lewis' Mere Christianity. He give the basis of generic Christianity without getting denominational. All denominations have their good and bad points, it is important to find a place that you can call 'home' regarding a Church affiliation.

Hi Artic, It would be like your'e saying
"I'm basically a good person, so I'll go to heaven." "OK, so I do some bad things, but I do more good things, so I'll go to heaven." "God won't send me to hell just because I don't live by the Bible. Times have changed!" "Only really bad people like child molesters and murderers go to hell."
These are all common rationales among most people, but the truth is, they are all lies. Satan, the ruler of the world, plants these thoughts in our heads. He, and anyone who follows his ways, is an enemy to God (1Pet 5:8). Satan always disguises himself as good (2 Corinthians 11:14), but he has control over all the minds that do not belong to God. "Satan, the god of this evil world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe, so they are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News that is shining upon them. They don't understand the message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God" (2 Corinthians 4:4).
The Bible teaches that there is no other way to salvation than through Christ. Jesus says in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me."
Jesus is the only way of salvation because He is the only One who can pay our sin penalty (Romans 6:23). No other religion teaches the depth or seriousness of sin and its consequences. No other religion offers the infinite payment of sin that only Jesus Christ could provide. No other “religious founder” was God become man (John 1:1,14) – the only way an infinite debt could be paid. Jesus had to be God so that He could pay our debt. Jesus had to be man so He could die. Salvation is available only through faith in Jesus Christ! “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Contact me if you have anymore questions, I'd be happy to answer :)
Have a great day!

Both. Of course we have to have faith in God and make him our Savior, but He must also be our Lord as well. And as our Lord, He must dictate our lives and how we live.
So the idea that you can just be saved and then go back to living your old life is false. God forgives our sins after we're saved but the Bible always assumes that we're working on being disciples (students) of Jesus and becoming more like Him.

When you accept Christ as your savior and the Holy Spirit comes to dwell inside of you, you will naturally be inclined away from sin and want to live the way Jesus lived. We are all sinners and will still sin from time to time but it is great to know that the Redeemer who redeemed you at salvation will continue to forgive you when you ask.

We are supposed to accept Jesus into our hearts and lives. If we truly believe in him we will want to live like him which is following him. So I believe the answer is both.

Classic christianity preaches you must accept Jesus as savior or you go to hell. This is the same branch that denies the science of evolution, so . . . . . . lets think about this one.
