I was in Cambodia this time last year.
I found I spent more money in Cambodia than I did in Thailand.
Not sure how you are getting to Cambodia... if you are doing a land crossing, seriously think twice about it... or leave it for the end of your trip when going back to Thailand.

Taking the ferry from Thailand to Cambodia (entering at Sihanoukville) is a better way to come into Cambodia. Need more info? Message me on that... dont want to stray off the topic.

I spent a month there and took $1200US That would have been enough if I didnt have some money go missing (my own fault), or keep buying stuff for the homeless children.
You may need a steel heart for Cambodia, its such an amazing place, but so saddening at the same time, and I couldnt help but spend a good portion of my budget on anything and everything that they try and sell you.
Might be nice if you take a HUGE bag of balloons... might get you out of having to buy things ☆
Brush up on your capital cities of the world too.. im not joking, they will bribe you hahaha, and they know the answer to everything they ask you!

Oops off topic again, sorry...
Siem Reap our accomodation was $4 a night, with fan and cold shower (maybe less)... you honestly dont need a hot shower there. We hired motorbike drivers for a few days and I think we payed them $20 but we heard that there were cheaper guys around, but our guys took us out to Cambodian bars and stuff, so it was a cultural experience.

Phnom Penh the accomodation was cheaper, still just a fan and cold shower, maybe $3 a night? We stayed on the river.
You can hire your own motorbikes in Phnom Penh.

Sihanoukville was about $5 a night, hot shower, and fan bungalow. We hired our own motorbikes there for $2 a day.

Food is relatively cheap in Cambodia... just dont let yourselves get ripped off. Basically anything and everything they will try to sell you for $1 or $2 (they use $US there, no matter what they try to tell you at the dodgy exchange places)....
Barter, barter, barter....

Didnt go to the islands in Thailand, so im not sure how much you need for there, but northern thailand was really cheap.

Again, Bangkok, I stayed with a friend, so Im not sure the general price there either... I think it might pay to spend a little more there... some places I heard can be a rather grotty.

Overall if you take $1000 and dont go silly buying every little something that they try to sell you, you will have more than enough.

It really depends the most on when (what months) you will be there as well as your comfort requirements, not to mention how much time will be spent at the resort beaches. If you go this summer, it's the start of the rainy season in Northern Thailand and Cambodia, and therefore requiring you to spend less money. If you go to the Gulf Coast it'll be more of a high season with better whether (Ko Samui, Ko Phang Ngan, Ko Tao), and things here will be slightly more expensive. Considering you go in July or August, spend maybe two weeks down south at the beaches, require a/c but minimal amenities, I'd figure $25-$35 per day in southern Thailand, $20-$25 per day in northern Thailand, and about $15-$20 per day in Cambodia. Make sure you get your vaccinations!! (especially malaria and hepatitis)

Add 20% to what you spent in 2001 - - If it is dollars.. the US Currency is down and prices are up somewhat.. Cambodia is more expensive than Thailand.. so, for your time in Cambodia, figure what you spent in Thailand in 2001 and then add 30-35%..

that should be close - - of course, depending upon if you plan to travel in the same manner as before..

have fun

15-20 dollars a day in Thailand should be more than enough and 10-15 in Cambodia

There should be not much difference in Thailand than when you were in 2001. Youcan probably use the same computation for Cambodia and you should be alright.

depends on where you're planning to stay, really. if you're planning on a cheap budget, US$15 a day in Thailand can carry you through the day. expect about 20-30% more expensive than 2001 (beer is 40 baht a bottle that was 25baht a bottle in '01)

Your budget will depend on the comfort level of where you want to stay. While in Koh Tao we spent about $3.50 (us dollars) a night at the Moon Dance. It is a bed and cold shower bungalow. There is a small restaurant-very good there. Then you hike into town. Chaing Mai we spent about $16.50 a day for a nice room, standard toilet and hot and cold showers. The Gap House was in walking distance to most things. Food was inexpensive and depended on where you ate. OH, a street massage was 75 cents for 30 minutes. I need one now.

That is up to what you want to buy. You can go with $25 or less a day if you want to use your money for food and transportation. Hostels go for $5 or less a day.
