There are sippy cups that are no spill that don't have valves, they are just really hard to sip out of. Try using those for awhile and if he gets frustrated because he can't get anything out, try moving to the ones that he's been dumping out. Only give them to him when you can sit there and watch to make sure he only uses it when he's going to drink, and not dump. Also, give him a cup without a lid, do this outside with water, and let him try to drink it with your help. He might learn what the process is better.

Try a cup with a straw. My daughter learned how to drink from a cup with a straw before I started using a sippy with the valve. I have a few of different shapes and sizes. All of them have lids so they don't spill or make a mess.

I suggest you help him to use the sippy until he learns to not dump it. If you give it to him to try, use only a small amount of liquid so he doesn't make a mess, or water. Also, just give it to him during meals when he is in his high chair and has a tray to catch the mess, until he gets better of course. Don't just allow him to carry it around like a toy. If he is thirsty, he will drink.

He will learn eventually. Good luck!

Tupperware used to carry children's cups/glasses with tops that had no valve. You might check with them.

By the way, he is a DOLL! What a cutie.

Here's a link to an Amazon page for the "Take and Toss" cups mentioned by someone else, and there are reviews from mom's that used them.

I have never heard of a doctor suggesting a free flowing sippy cup.

I have a 2 year old (just turned 2) and we use the Nuby sippy cup for him and he loves it. There are NO valves and when you turn it upside down it does NOT drip or leak. You can buy them at walmart for 1.65 or 1.73 in price. They come in all different colors.

My son drinks straight from a cup now at the dinner table. But when he is on the go he gets his nuby sippy cup! I LOVE THEM!

what was the doctors reasonings for that whether the cup has a valve or not its still works the same. I have an 18 month old and a 4 year old and I have never heard of doing that just do what you feel is right after all your the mom and you know your child better than anyone.

Your beautiful baby is only 1 1/2 !! Why is the doctor trying so hard to make him grow up - I have never heard of such a thing? I agree with a few moms above -- there are reversable valves -- they are wonderful!! If you insist on giving the cups with no valves - make it water ONLY until he masters the cup (should be around 4 yrs old).

They have Take & Toss cups. They are plastic so that can be reused. They have no valve, or you can just take the valve out of the regular ones. When he starts to dump the cup take it away and sternly say "NO". Don't let him have the cup unless he is at the table so you don't have to clean up puddles and stains on your floors and carpets.
