I got by in middle school with doodling. I was a crappy artist, but I drew. Being the geek I was, it was the typical teenage boy infatuation with men with swords.

Doodling phased out in high school, so I started writing. Usually, the length of the class meant writing some poetry. Now, drawing or writing in class can be viewed as disruptive, so hide your activities. Just because it's a method to stay awake doesn't mean teachers appreciate it.

I also got by with doing homework from another class. This had the benefit of freeing up my evenings. And teachers are less inclined to stop you from doing homework than doodling. Some teachers are pretty hard-nosed about how the only thing you should have on your desk is material related to their classes. So, be careful if you try this route.

The best way to stay awake is to keep active. That can be hard to do when sitting still for 50 minutes.

the sleep and caffeine advice is great, and i truly like the ********* idea....know a few people i'd have liked to try that on.

but here's a few more, if the class is air conditioned, don't wear light clothing, and you'll be cold, you won't be sleeping if you're chilly. also, try to bring something with you to do, that will keep your hands busy, but not your mind - presuming you want to pay attention in class too (though i am certainly aware that thats not always true)
I had 3 hour Remedies lectures where i played an internet spades tournament every class. the woman taught straight from the book, and i had it done, so paying attention wasn't key for me there.

Bring a huge pack of chewing gum and chew until the class is over, that usually helps me to stay awake.

I have a problem with that, but I bring candy with me as crazy as it sounds. Something really fruity/sugary like Starbursts - I eat them whenever I need a boost of energy or something to just keep me busy. There are also energy chews on the market that you can buy over the counter to give you the boost you need.

Outside of candy and things, try taking notes on whatever your teacher is saying. Or doodle things while he/she is talking. It's hard, but you really have to work at it.

get 8 hours of sleep or more, and keep telling yourself to stay focused. If you keep finding that you fall asleep in class, then tell yourself how important it is to be successful in school. It just shows carelessness and realizing that it is wrong is the first step in solving the problem.

Make sure that you get enough sleep every night, have a healthy breakfast in the morning and plenty of vitamins and minerals.

Get enough sleep. Exercise will also help. Don't eat a bunch of fatty foods, those just make you sleepy with the high fat content.

just make sure you sleep early at night and don't eat too much of food.
if you are sleeping in the class, just go to the toilet and drop water on your eye or start jumping up.
