XP is better in a technical sense. Also in a compatibility perspective. I really do prefer XP sp2 over windows 2000 pro.

XP has more drivers for all the new hardware, games and such. And Microsoft does roll out a lot of fixes and updates - you can have long debates whether you really need this.
Support for your new hardware is much better available.

However, if you currently have windows 2000 installed, and you are happy with this, it is probably best to keep it as it is. Most stuff normal users need work fine today. Would you need to keep this install for a couple of years I do advise to go to XP.
Oh, and Windows 2000 is more forgiving if you did not install it with the right keys.

I had a good experience with buying a new pc with XP preinstalled. Nothing is easier than that. Besides, an OEM (preinstalled) licence is much cheaper than buying a new XP retail version.

So, I guess it is best to buy XP when you buy a new pc, and stick with 2000 as long as you have that installed properly.

edit:
As for older games (95/98), they might not work in XP, but then I expect these also not to work in 2000.
For a kids pc I guess you are not going to spend the licencing fee. Check memory, if below 256 use windows 2000 for sure. Otherwise you might try to install XP.

To play more decent games, buy memory and use XP.

I would have to say that, for kids, XP would be the better choice, as children will want to play games. Windows 2000 is more of a business/server type OS and it can "hiccup" when installing/playing games. I, myself, have never run Windows 2000 but have heard that its almost useless when trying to load/play games. Search around the Microsoft Windows Site to get an idea of what you can and can't do with Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

I switched from 2000 to XP Professional and I regret it. Unless you have at least 256Mb ram it runs a lot slower. However, the more memory the better on any PC. XP tries to be helpful but I still don't like it as much as 2000. I wouldn't worry about lack of support for 2000 for some years yet.

Personally I would go for the XP version. Microsoft will be supporting XP for longer than it will 2000.

xp is better, i've used both. if you're installing and choosing one better consider the pc's hardware as xp requires more resource than 2000 if your pc can handle xp install xp but if not you might get frustrated waiting for programs to run cause it'll eat up a lot of resource and slow your pc

If you have 512mb RAM or more I'd go for XP, its safer on the Internet because its harder to hack.
If you have less than 512 mb RAM then 2000 may be a bit faster but it won't be as secure and I'd avoid using Internet Explorer with it.

XP is slow... but most of games do not work on professional...
If you are a gamer, and use your PC for entertainment, use XP. Otherwise, 2000 Profesional is good.
