Because they are involved in a sanctified act by God with the man they married - the only man allowed to see them without it on. According to tradition, only the man a women marries, and immediate family inside the house, are allowed to see her in her natural state, with nothing on, including the burkha. Once she goes otside, she must again cover up in respect for God.
