Its a HP scanjet 3800 USB scanner

yes its usb, it might be the power coz it crashes as if there is a power failure, dont know the power supply size though, cant open the case now.

Try a different USB port.

I had the same problem. I plugged the scanner into a port I had been using for my printer and it worked. I plugged the printer into the port the scanner wouldn't work in and it worked fine.

how are you connecting it?...USB?....maybe the power required by that USB port is too much for the system to handle and it gives up....what is your power supply wattage?...
