The doctors give you 3 types of medications, one puts you to sleep, one paralyzes you so you dont move during the operation, and the third makes you not be able to feel or remember what goes on while you are under.

Anesthesia or anaesthesia (see spelling differences), has traditionally meant the process of blocking the perception of pain and other sensations. This allows patients to undergo surgery and other procedures without the distress and pain they would otherwise experience. It comes from the Greek roots an-, "not, without" and aesthētos, "perceptible, able to feel". The word was coined by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. in 1846.

Today, the term anesthesia in it's most general form has 5 components 1. Analgesia - blocking the conscious perception of pain 2. Hypnosis - producing unconsciousness 3. Amnesia - preventing memory formation 4. Relaxation - preventing unwanted movement or muscle tone 5. Homeostasis - preserving normal body functioning (e.g., maintaining blood pressure within normal physiologic range)

It's a bit scary but, we know more about what anesthetics do (drug A makes you sleep, drub B blocks the pain) than about how they work!

The mechanism by which anesthetics work is not only about the interaction with nerve cells. I spent a summer in a lab studying the effects of anesthetics at a cellular level, using yeast. Believe it or not, even without a nervous system yeast responds to anesthetics--as you apply more and more you see less and less growth.
