Aboslutely. I am an EMT and 75% of the calls I take each week, month, year are the result of smoking not just by the patient but from second hand smoke as well. It truly changes your perspective on smoking when you are trying to help someone breathe and they can't because they have lung cancer and only have 1/2 of one lung left, or they have emphasyma and their chest is barrelled out and changed shape because they have been trying so hard to breathe for so long. And these aren't the only effects, smoking long term can also affect a persons eyesight, circulation and digestional function leading to an increased chance in blindness, gout, ulcers, and more. I have seen people with throat cancer who have needed a tracheotomy ( a hole in their neck) to breathe. I used to smoke, but after being an EMT and after watching as my best friends Dad and my grandmother slowly died from the complications of having been life long smokers I couldn't force myself to pick up another cigarette.
When it comes to your family members who smoke, you have a right to be concerned. The thing to remember is that you can't force people to change though. I have seen some of these same people dying from the effects of smoking and knowing that is what caused it, fight with nursing staff to go outside for another smoke. They know it is harmful, but just like with any other drug it is an addiction and it is very hard to fight the urge to light up. Express your concerns to them, but don't hound them about it as most people who are addicted and who have it thrown in their face just get angry. They hear you but resent the fact someone is trying to tell them they have to stop. It isn't them, it is the control of the addiction that makes them act this way. Just remind them you love them and how sad you would be to lose them and leave the choice up to them. What YOU can do to make a difference is NEVER START smoking. And, if you are around them when they smoke, leave the room, ask them to smoke outside or not around you. You have a right to protect yourself from their smoking, afterall it is their habit and you shouldn't have to pay for it. You may not be able to change them or their habit but you can start a chain reaction of not smoking by never picking up the habit yourself and teaching your future children, grandchildren etc. the benefits of doing the same.
I hope this has been helpful for you.
Good luck, sweetheart.

Well, everyone is going to die sooner or later. Of course smoking causes health problems and many of those lead to death. Bad part is, second hand smoke causes problems for people who are not making the choice to smoke. Those problems can also lead to death. Better not to smoke. Alot cheaper too.

Yes it does..I watched my mom die of it 2 years ago at the young age of 49. There is nothing you can do to stop them they will smoke if they won't I smoke and I want to quit but it is harder then people think.

Yes...unequivocably. I saw firsthand when I took a course in anatomy & physiology in college how smoking ravages your body. One of the specimens we had in the lab had died from lung cancer, and the body was riddled with it...the lungs were blackened and there was an obvious tumor that had spread through one of them. Smoking can also cause emphysema, heart disease, other forms of cancer, chronic bronchitis, and many other problems. I was the child who spent years pleading with my father to quit because I knew it was terrible. It is basically a slow way to commit suicide.
And listen to the person who posted about COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)...which is basically a slow form of suffocation as your lungs fail over time. Respiratory diseases are a horrible way to die, and often the completely unnecessary result of many years of tobacco use.

the sad truth is that more people die of second hand smoke
than smoking themselves.
your family members may quit on their own eventually, but for yourself when they are smoking go outside or ask them to

it doesnt help living but do we all want to live forever here?i know a better place than here.i do know 30 years ago farmers were not using pestcides on their tobacco crop and cancer wasnt as widespread as it is now.so i think that those pesticides and other types of sprays used to control insects growth and other things like fertilizers really are doing the harm.
