Puh-leez, Volkswagen fo sho, Toyota make the most boring cars ever.......the reason they sell loads of them is they appeal to all the older folks with spare cash lying about. Even Toyota's 'sporty' models like the Celica are about as stimulating as expired valium.

When I set out to buy my third car I asked mysefl what is the most important feature for me? Looks, mileage, price, speed, reliability etc, etc. After researching by reading countless of articles and magazines, I came upon a article called, "the most reliable car", Toyota Corolla. Ok, I am sure people can argue that point, it is like asking if Michael Jordan is the best basketball player. I bought a 98 Corolla. My goodness, this car is flawless. I am a weekend mechanic in a sense, but my tools sit there with no action at all (besides brakes, oil changes and tune ups). I have about 135,000 miles, I just replaced the serpentine belt just to be safe. The engine is quiet and responsive. It even feels like a larger car. In Chicago, the oldest cars you can see are Toyotas. I have seen sone from the 60's. You rarely ever see old VW Rabbitts, Buses or Beetles. If you do, you see guys pour hundreds of dollars to keep them running. Another example, Toyota Pickup trucks. You seen these in Latin America, Africa and other poor countries, You see people with 300,000 miles up to a million miles on an engine. No car can even come close. Toyotas have a high re-sale value also. If yhou are a person that changes cars every 5 years, A VW is cool. But if you keep them longer, Toyota is the way to go. Another conclusion, if the VW is so great, why do they keep on getting rid of models. Corollas have been around for years and continue to sell strong. The Prius for example is highly rated. Very reliable cars. I never worry that I will die in traffic like I did with my Ford. It needed repair almost monthly. The mechanics knew my first name every time I went to the shop. Was tired of calling tow trucks.

VW's definitly are more entertaining. However Toyotas have FAR fewer problems than vw. A 3 year old Toyota is more reliable than a brand spankin new VW.
If you are going VW, do this: Lease for 3 years. Examine the contract like a surgeon looking for a brain tumor. Make sure there is nothing fishy and do not buy their flimsy explanaitions of the fishy odor. Make sure everything is covered, and then drive.
If you are buying and are concenred about your budget, Toyota is the only way to go.

According to the UK Consumer Association's Magazine "Which?" Toyota (including Lexus) is the most maker of the most reliable cars whilst Volkswagen is poor for reliability.
I beleive the BBC Top Gear / JD power surbveys show similar results.

Toyota without a doubt
I just did 450miles in one day with my baby yaris and it's not even missed a single beat - and also everything still feels like brand new and works perfectly fine. They build brilliant cars and they employ UK workers which cannot be said about VW. VW have had their days now and are having to sack staff so lack of staff mean build quality will decrease hence more unreliable cars. Also VW have also decided to axe lots of model variations due to they say it;s costing them too much which probably shows you that VW sales are down hence they are also now offering discounts and money back features like Citroen.
In fact even Skoda are making better cars than VW.

Toyota, in my opinion. It will run for 300 thousand miles w/o needing anything done to it besides the usual care given to a vehicle.
