In my opinion the best "machine gun" falls into two categories:

HEAVY MACHINE GUN:
The Browning M2 .50 cal (12.7 mm)
Weight 84 pounds
Cyclic rate 500 rounds per minute
Maximum effective range 2000M or 6520 feet
Maximum range 6.8km or 4.2 miles

MEDIUM MACHINE GUN:
The M240B Squad Automatic Weapon 7.62mm
Weight 27.5 pounds (loaded)
Cyclic rate 200-600 rounds per minute
Maximum effective range 1800M or 5094 feet

By the way....
Matt an AK47 is an assault rifle
Bob Barker the A-10 30mm is a cannon
Nano48 the M16 is an assault rifle

These are not machine guns.....

The M2HB .50 Heavy Machine Gun, period without question!

This masterpeice of technology was developed by the most underated Engineer in history. Mr John M. Browning. Underated, because he never had a college education. Just a damn good gunsmith from Utah.
The M2 is the oldest weapon is US service. First used in 1923. It has armed troops, tanks, planes and ships arround the world every since. In a world of computers, Autocad, robots, etc. A gun made by a guy with brains, paper & pencil, and a slide rule 80 years ago is still the standard all MG's are judged.

There are two that come to my mind, the M240 machine gun, which is a 7.62mm rifle bored weapon and the M2 Browning .50 caliber, 12.7mm for the laymen. They are the creww serve weapons on the M1A1 Main Battle Tank.

Oh and all machine guns are automatic, hence the name Machine Gun...
