Heckler and Koch PSG-1 is one of the most accurate rifles and in 7.62 caliber it has good power and range for any practical sniping purposes.

As a former USMC tanker, I would say the Rimenthall 120MM smooth bore cannon on a MIA1-block 2. It has a laser rangefinder, Thermal sights, and can hit any target out to approx 3500 meters. Also it can fire on the move in any direction (due to a stabilization system in the turret which allows the weapon to remain on target, no matter how the tank moves), allowing the gunner to fire the cannon and hit any designated target, even down to "people" size. This happens at speeds (off road) of 30-40 mph. Any doubts, of this "sniper rifle's, accuracy" can be resolved by going to a live fire range when your local Army or Marine tank unit is bore sighting the guns. You will have your answer. Good question though..

The PSG-1 is very overrated, there's more accurate rifles out there that cost a lot less. You're paying for the name-brand with that one.
.50 cals are also really overrated...they make a big boom, and they kill whatever they hit, but their accuracy is severely degraded as the range to the target increases. .50 cal rounds are more affected by winds and humidity than a 7.62 round.
And it's hard to say which sniper rifle is best, because like the guy above me said, it really is mostly about the sniper, not the rifle.

Without a doubt, the Heckler and Koch PSG-1. Nothing touches it. Not even close.
Wait a second, why would someone ask this anyways. The ultimate sniper rifle? I hope it is someone in Marine Corp recon who has a laser beam on Osama's butt and needs a clear shot and not some ruffian.

They are good tries but the longest kill shot with a sniper rifle is held by a Canadian which hit a Taliban soldier and killed him with a 7900 foot shot. That is incredible. It was a McMillian .50 cal bolt action.

The Barrett Model 99, .416 calibre, seems to be the top of the line now. Barrett is favoring this new rifle over its .50 calibre. It shoots flatter and hits harder.

It all depends on what exactly you want the rifle to do? Anti amour? kills over v long range? Urban warfare? Covert warfare?
One rifle cannot be the best at everything, they are all a compromise or a speciality gun.
