If your ball goes out of bounds from tee box it costs you stroke plus distance. You would have to hit another ball from tee box. You would be hitting three from tee box. If you think you went out of bounds on second shot you would hit provisional ball in case you went out. If you find out you were out of bounds you would be laying four. You would be out in 2, back in3 and hit four. You always hit a provisional ball in case you went out, if you do not go out , you use your original shot and you are not charged the penalty. Out of bounds is stroke and distance that is why it is 2 shot penalty.

pga rules are: stroke and distance..you re-tee and try again your hitting your 3rd and lye 4 hopefully in the fairway. Thats if it goes OB or if its lost. If you hit it into the woods and can find it you have the option of taking a drop anywhere along the line from the tee to where it went into the trees. It is the rule for unplayable lye. If the trees are marked as a lateral hazzard the same rule applies. Most casual weekend golfers dont use stroke and distance when ob most dont know the rule. If you think your ball went ob always hit a provisional.

The penalty is always stroke and distance for a ball hit OB.
It is also stroke and distance for any lost ball.

You take a penalty stroke at the point where the ball went out of bounds not closer to the hole. One penalty stroke....
