I had a cockatiel and it was great but drove dh insane with the noise. Not only did it talk all the time, but it mimicked the microwave, telephone (never knew which was really ringing) and the doorbell. These were not an issue, but the early morning skwaking every single day was. Is there such a thing as a people friendly bird that is not tooooo noisy?

I have two cockatiels and they are fairly quiet. I guess it depends on personality type. Maybe you should try a female cockatiel, they are quieter. Parakeets are also pretty quiet. Any larger birds are more likely to be louder. You could get a smaller bird like a canary or some finches, but they never really get tame.

Sorry, but the more noisy a bird is, the happier they are. You will not escape this with any kind of Parrot you decide to keep.

Most of the time, if you have a pair, they are a tad less noisy because they have company. This means nothing, though, at the start of the breeding season. If you end up with males of ANY species, they make MORE noise to attract a mate- which is a good percentage of the time, the owner.

Try teaching whispers and "sweet nothings". If you live in a quiet household, this is easy. When you are a parent of 6 kids, a dog, a cat, 8 different cellular phone rings and a partridge in a pair tree, its quite a bit more difficult. They want attention too, and a phone rings, a child screams, a microwave "dings" and a dog and cat vocalize and THEY get attention, so it is taught in their own mind that the louder they (as a parrot) are, the more attention they (the parrot) will get.

A parrot (and yes, I own several different species in my home- Cockatiels, African Greys, a Parakeet... and more) will not understand the concept of a week-end. My husband gets up at 5:30 in the morning, Monday through Friday, and that's when my flock starts to rustle. Saturdays and Sundays mean nothing. If they are not out of their cages or even see me by 8 in the morning, my home turns into a jungle of noise. As a bird owner, I can sympathize, and this is why out-of-town guests stay at their own risk.

The rule of thumb here- bigger the bird, the louder the noise. If you want a really quiet bird, reward them when they are quiet, and only respond when they are playing quietly or just hanging out. They will learn that being quiet means a reward, and the best way to a parrots heart is their stomach. Do not respond when they screech or scream, and ignore them if they continue. DO NOT YELL BACK. Like I said, the noisier, the happier, and they will think of it as a really fun game when you join in. "Shut up" means nothing if it is a louder pitch then they can make. They will try to top you, and will eventually succeed.

I know the perfect bird

A small Toucan

Such as a Green Aracari or Emerald Toucanet

They have a specialized diet of non-citric fruit and low iron softbill pellets.

They are the same size as a cockatiel but with the toucan beak.

They cannot bite hard enough to break the skin either

They can be family oriented pets that love to play with little kids with proper supervision, and love to have thier necks scratched and will purr like a kitten when really happy.

To find a breeder or more info go to www.summersbirds.com, or www.emeraldforestbirds.com

My friend has a Green Aracari for her 5, 6, and 8 year old kids, it is so gentle and playful. It goes to anybody and loves to play and have its neck scratched.

Best Of Luck Joe

Parrotlets

They are amazing little parrots, and are incapable of screaming.
They are the smallets parrot in the world, so easy to house, feed well and buy toys for!
They are inquisitive, fearless, and a ball of laughs so I highly recommend them.
I own several and cant say enough about their awesome personalities, and how quiet they are copmpared to my lovebirds, budgies, and african grey!

if you want a cuddly pet bird, be sure to find a reputable breeder (yahoo groups have many many email lists where you can research & find a good local breeder, the pet stores are NOT usually a good source) who handraises their parrotlets, they are not easy to tame at all if not hand reared, altho there are always exceptions!

good luck,

Not really..I have had several different types of birds in my lifetime, and all of them squaked early morning and right around 4-6 o'clock..it's built in. If you want to decrease the squaking in the morning, put a sheet over their cage at night, and make sure the room they are in is dark. They'll squak when you take the cover off and let light in the room in the morning, but better than waking up to it.

I feed any clean seed and pellets left on the backside of the cage to the outdoors birds. They like it while they confirm this is fit for human intake. The cardinals chow down on the fruit flavored Zupreme. It shocked me because of the fact at my final residing house they does not touch it. if your buddies feed birds they arrive on your feeding section to confirm if the pickings are better. they are not dependable and choose for the wonderful candies. We additionally feed wild poultry nutrition from Agway . We feed the cornless mixture because of the fact the corn has a bent to get damp and harm in our section. Starlings consume something. Blue jays and cardinals love sunflower and safflower seeds. carry close a suet cake & watch the exciting.

I have 2 parakeets and just love them. They are quiet at night when I cover them for bed and they do talk durinn the day but they do sleep as well so they aren't talking no stop. They love to be talked to as well, so if you interact with them, they will love it. I hate to say, but all birds do talk in one way or another, and if the talking is bothering you than maybe you need to find a quieter pet. sorry to say this. good luck.

Senegal parrots are considered great "apartment" birds because they do not have loud voices. They are beautiful birds, and can have a strong vocabulary, and live for about 30 years.
