I am a Boxer Breeder and Owner. And just like black labs they have a lot of energy. I have the same problem with my Dame. If you do not walk them then they can not get that energy out ya see. And so when the door opens there gone. Walking is a stress releaver for K-9's. And if this is not done then they become unhappy and will in up holding in all that stress and can become mean. So the best thing that you can do is walk or take him or her to the lake for some play time. Yes its true you need to make your self the alfa. But most pep do it in the wrong way and the K-9 ends up fearing the owner. What you sould do is first Sit him or her down, Make it lay from but end to paws on the floor. Start to lay it on its side, than make sure the head stays down on the ground. If you do this with no anger than in dog terms u have become the alfa and not them any more. Because a K-9 with no respect for there owner will NOT listen to any thing like stop heal come or even stay.

If he is an intact male it could be the hunt for a mate. If he is not it could be a learned behavior that he learned prior to being neutered. Is he the only dog in the house, is he found at the same place every time he runs away, is he getting enough exercise, is the backyard secure? If you can answer some these questions, then you might find or eliminate a cause to the problem.
Your best bet is to consult an animal behaviorist ( ask your vet for a referral) if the problem is not hormonal. Good luck.

Is it a boy? And if so is he neutered? The scent of a female in heat can travel quite far and a male's instinct is to mate with any and every female who is in heat. It might be the breed also. He might need more exercise than you are giving him because labs belong to the working class breed. At the animal shelter where I volunteer we always have four or five labs who were picked up as strays. I guess they just like to run. But they are wonderfully trainable. Try neutering and some obedience classes.

do you take him/her for long walks or play with it alot (frisbees and tennis balls can be a dogs best friend)...labs are hyper dogs and need alot of play time. if it is a male dog, he may be in search of a female to mate with. dogs need alot of attention and need to get the built up hyperness out of there system from the night before or from during the day when no one is around. some dogs...just like to run. try taking it to a dog park or for a hike in a park or mountains where it can get excercise. think about it...when you are stuck at home for a long period of time not doing anything, don't you get really bored, want to get out and not go back home for a while?

It's probly because he/she is not trained to be off the leach and also they are very hyper and energetic dogs this is from experience i have a black lab myself. And also when mine runs away from me he's trying to play a game and wants me to chase after him, so if you dont'chase him he might come back and realize u dont want to play

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/qadDG

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Maybe he runs away because he is scared of you and maybe he dont like the way you treat him/her cause i had a black and white dog and he always tried to escape because he was scared of us and maybe we didnt treat him right.

If your parents never taught you to let them know when and where you were going, you would've wondered off too. As a matter of fact, most of us wondered off occasionally anyways. Its just a behavioral issue. It doesn't have anything to do with whether or not they like where they are staying.
