I noticed that on my budgies beak there is what seems to be a build up of something. I don't know if it is dried food or something worse like fungus. It is on the end of his beak and also on the lower beak (the area that is the "lower lip"). On the lower part, the build up looks quite large, almost like a lump. He does not seem sick, he is still lively and is eating as usual. I am worried about this as I leave for a trip tomorrow and will be leaving my bird with relatives. Does anyone know what might be causing this and how I can treat it?

This is called Scaley Face.It is caused by a mite, cnemidocoptes pilae,In severe cases it can spread to the legs and even to the body, and may lead to malformation of the beak.Treatment is quite simple, and consists of applying cream or lotion, which you can obtain from your pet store,to the affected area. My advice to you is to see a vet,as it sounds quite severe. If you have more than one bird, keep it isolated from the other/others.The cage should be washed with a disinfectant solution to kill any parasites surviving there. Good luck with this, hope he/she recovers soon.

I ditto Karen S. Can't say for sure what it is, but it can be serious. And like the other person said, birds don't always look or act sick until it's too late.

I would also try to find specifically an AVIAN VET. Most of the all purpose vets here in my town anyway - are idiots. But if that's all you have, take him there. :) Better than not doing anything at all.

And I highly suggest NOT taking the bird to a pet store to get their advice. If you do, ask several and not just one. Most aren't experienced enough to give a good diagnosis. And some may just say what they think it is to sound knowledable. It's not their bird and they're probably not as concerned as you are. However, if you have a bird pet store in specific, that would be a good start.

And yes., if you have other birds, keep this one isolated in it's own room.

My budgie had the same thing. Take it to a close petshop and take your budgie with you. ask for somethingthat you can apply to make this dissapear. They gave us a small bottle of liquid that we had to apply every so often. There are tiny little insects that lay eggs on their beaks. It is nothing too worry about too much, but seek a petshop employees help very soon to help cure the problem.

Take him to the vet. It might be something relatively harmless like mites, but there are several dangerous bird diseases that have unusual growths on the beak as a symptom. If you don't have time to take him, make sure your relatives do.

take the bird to an avian vet, birds hide there sickness until it is too late to fix. it may just be a food build up or the beak has overgrown or something totally different. your best bet is having a vet look at him.
