HE totesport Ayr Gold Cup held on the third and final day every year of the totesport Ayr Gold Cup Festival is Europe's richest sprint handicap and also the top flat race of the Scottish racing calendar.
And this year more than 12,000 people packed the Ayr stands to witness one of the most thrilling finishes to the race for years.
Seb Sanders rode an inspired race to land the spoils on Presto Shinko (12/1) by a short head from the Paul Hanagan ridden Fonthill Road (10/1) with Irish raider Majestic Times (16/1) a further short head away in third. Yomalo, a 66/1 shot was fourth.
The £70,000 first prize always attracts a maximum entry and the sight of 28 runners hurtling down the six furlongs straight at Ayr is one of the most exciting in racing.
The horses who are balloted out of the totesport Gold Cup contest the totesport Ayr Silver Cup the Friday before the big race and the Dandy Nicholls trained Machinist won at 12/1 with top weight Roman Maze second at 20/1 and Golden Dixie (12/1) third.
The totesport Ayr Gold Cup in recent years has been a happy hunting ground for trainer David ‘ Dandy' Nicholls who has won four out of the last six runnings.
And he would be the first to admit that there's a magic about Ayr Gold Cup that makes it a very, very special date on the racing calendar.
Huge crowds flock to the course , the whole town of Ayr is buzzing and it's a local holiday – a very special day indeed.
2006 sees the famous old race run on Saturday September 16 and its very much a case of book your tickets early for no race captures the imagination of the public quite like this one.
Asked about the race Dandy Nicholls says : “I just love it. I love training sprinters and the Ayr Gold Cup is as good a sprint race as there is. My horses always seem to run well at Ayr and I'm looking forward already to the 2006 race.”
Punters also love the Ayr Gold Cup and it is one of the top gambling races in Britain, easily making the top five.
It also makes a smashing day out. From early in the day the atmosphere builds up. You can arrive in Ayr town centre early, walk the short distance to the racecourse and become totally enthtralled by the sheer occasion.
It truly is one of Scotland's top sporting events and it can be made an even more special day by booking some corporate hospitality as outlined elsewhere in this brochure.
