Do not believe ANYBODY who tells you it is easy to get work here, they are either ignorant or lying to you. I've lived in Thailand for 10 years now and my knowledge is current. Firstly, in order to work legally, you have to have a job which could not be done by a Thai, in practice that generally means language teaching. Secondly many areas of employment are restircted to Thais only and I'm afraid that includes anything and everything to do with tourism. There are also vast numbers of young Thai people with advanced degrees in technology who are desperate for work. You should also be aware that salaries are extremely low, for westerners they average about $1000 dollars and even in Thailand that's not a lot. If you really want to work here then the best way to do it is to get employment with a western company that has offices in Thailand, then apply for a transfer. That way you will qualify for a work visa and be entitled to a reasonable salary. You should look at www.thaivisa.com and at www.ajarn.com for some sound advice about job prospects and living conditions. I'd also recommend a look at www.jobsdb.co.th, Thailands most popular employment website, it'll give you a realistic idea of what's available outside the teaching area.
As for settling down, once you get a decent job that's easy
enough to do, in my experience most westerners tend to get
disillusioned/ground down after a few years, I think this is because they don't bother to learn the language or try to understand the culture but if you can do those things you'll have a great time here.
Hope that helps, feel free to ask for more info if you need it.

Thailand is a wonderful place, I would recommend living in Northern Thailand. Have you ever visited Thailand before?
It would pay to take a vacation there for a month or so, to travel around first if not. That way you can get a feel for which environments you prefer.
Seeing as you are working in tourism, perhaps you could look at opening up some kind of tourism company, and hiring local staff. With your husband working in I.T, as someone else mentioned, there are many jobs available for that.
Its not hard to come across jobs in Thailand.
I found that the people in the north were a little more pure and natural, whereas Bangkok and further south were more focused on the tourism trade... However if you are fortunate to have some Thai friends, they are such lovely people.
Settling down in Thailand will be a piece of cake. Thailand is inexpensive, and such a great place to travel around. The best of both worlds, mountainous terrain at the northern part, and beaches at the southern part.
All the best of luck to you.

It is a great place to live if you don't mind tropical climates. It is always hot and humid.
But not a good place to look for work. Salaries in Thailand are very low. It is difficult even for ambitious, educated Thais to earn much. A young doctor working in a rural clinic and a teacher with many years experience both make ~$300/month and a fast food, retail or factory worker ~$150/month, if they put in some O/T.
Missionaries live well. The Thais are very polite to them so they think they are doing well but generally convince few Buddhists to convert. The ones that cannot speak Thai have no chance at all but there are many of them living a comfortable Western lifestyle.
English teachers make perhaps $1,000/month in Bangkok and closer to $700/month elsewhere. You can live okay on this but it would be difficult to save or raise a family.
Attached are a couple of links to articles from ajarn.com an excellent website about teaching in Thailand and Thailand in general.
Retiring in Thailand is a reasonable goal. Living and trying to work there is not easy.

You have to have a local interpreter because Thais hardly speak english ........... If you have experience in the Hotel Industry... you can easily find a job in thailand but its not as rewarding here in the US...

everyone is different. you need to come try it for a year or so before making any big decisions. Thai language is quite easy to learn. Cost of living is low. but you may find adapting difficult. again, everyone is different. just try it.
