In the UK a GP will issue a death certificate there and then. You will then need to take his death certificate to the Registry Office to have the death registered. The Registry Office will give you a few copies so that you can pass them on to undertakers/banks/DSS/mortgage companies, life insurance companies etc.
Make sure you always keep a copy safe. I couldn't find my mum's death certificate for her pension and ended up having to pay £15 for a single copy.
Should you require 2 death certificates (Cremation) Your GP should be able to help. Usually another GP from his/her own surgery will oblige.
I must say though, should the death be unexpected, GP may hold death certificate until the post mortem. It happens sometimes, not because anyone suspect foul play but because they have to make double sure that the person died of natural causes.

the county has an office called public records, you can get an old death certificate there, but if it is a recent death the mortuary should provide you with a copy and for a few dollors more may produce as many as you need, some companies need originals but most will take a photo copy.

Well first of all i am terribly sorry for your recent loss, but just remember that life goes on and I'm not saying to forget about the person that has just passed on but think about it they would not want you to be unhappy for the rest of your life just because they passed on would they?!? No i didn't think so-so i know its easier said than done but try and be happy.
And in relation to your question you will need to go to the coroners office, i think. But if you are not quite sure you could always check it up on line couldn't you or ask or phone the police and ask them where you could go to get things sorted out.
Just remember though try and be happy as who ever you have recently lost would not want you to be unhappy for the rest of your life on there account.
GOOD LUCK x x x

If the person died in hospital the Dr/Consultant hands it over.
You then take it to the Registration offices which is usually local.
