Did you delete anything recently?
If you have then did you empty the bin?
if you have not done anything above then your excel.exe is missing or the window path might have been changed.
Try this.
1 Open your browser and click on search.
2 Type EXCEL.EXE
3 Click on search
If windows find the EXCEL.EXE then you be fine if not then you will have to re-install it.
4 If you deleted and bin is not empty then open bin
5 see if your excel.exe there
6 If you find it in bin then click on it and restore. This should start your EXCEL.EXE
Good Luck

Please run the search for excel.exe in case you find it then try running excel by double clicking on exe file.
It opens up to a new document/worksheet.
then try opening a excel worksheet(existing file) by using option to open a file. If it opens through open file option and not by double clicking a excel document the follow these steps.
goto run click on browse goto c drive, then program files then microsoft office then to office X(x would depend on version of office you are using).here you would find excel.exe. Double click on excel.exe.
The whole path would appear in the run box as my example below
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE"
note the quote marks DONT remove them.
(I have Office2007 Beta2 installed therefore my Office folder appears as Office12 it could be different for you depending on Office version you are using.)
leave a space after the quote close and type /unregserver it would appear like this...
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /unregserver
press ok. You would see a new Excel worksheet open up.
close this excel worksheet and now try opening you Excel file by double clicking it. It should have sorted out the problem.
In case you still get an error. go back to run and do the same as above but instead of /unregserver use /regserver it wud appear as below.
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /regserver
Press ok. again you would see a new Excel worksheet open. close this new worksheet and then again try opening the worksheet by double clicking on it.
Hopefully this would resolve the problem. If not you would be better off reinstalling or using Office repair option from the Office installation CD's.

maybe because u saved a file as a different name (not the original name you have saved it earlier) or a different location. this happened to me before, and that was the reason, i saved it again on the desktop instead of "my documents". but there are other reasons as well, i don't know what it is in your situation.

if you have the excel or office disc, then go to the help button on the menu bar in excel, choose to detect and repair, it will start to do that and may ask you to insert the disc.
