when I try to view the videos it plays the sound but not the picture. a friend of mine said it might be that I dont have the right codex. what are codex and how can I get the ones that I need?

Just do a search for the current codecs for the program that you are trying to play the video in. You should find them easily.
Divx is a good one.

download and install Klite media codec pack

You need the ffdshow xvid/divx codec.
