I always assumed the opposite of love is hate. Just like black and white, old and young, male and female, right and left, north and south, up and down and the list goes on and on.

The opposite of love is not hate - it is apathy.
Hatred is still caring about someone - perhaps caring about bad things happening to them, but caring nonetheless. Apathy is not caring at all.

Hate is an obsession, or being overwhelmed by powerful feelings, thus is in a way more similar to love.
