It is an old name dating back to the days of the prophet Abraham (as). It is a derivative of the name of the mountain called El-Marwah in Saudi Arabia. The wife of the prophet , by divine guidance was led to two hill sides , El-Marwah and A-Saffa in search for water, which is today called zamzam. The feminine version , therefore, of Marwan is Saffa.
