Heavy weights does not necessarily mean you will get bigger and more bulky muscles. If you are doing 10 pound dumbbells for 40 reps, that is by no means going to equal big bulky muscles. The rule of thumb is for mass and strength, you should have sets with reps in the range of 8-12. Anything below 8 reps is generally consider more for power and strength. Anything above 12 reps is considered for endurance. If you are trying to keep yourself from getting bulky than do weights that you can do for 10 or more reps. There are so many factors that go into how your muscles develop and your diet and gentics are probably the ultimate factor on if you get bulky muscles. My suggestion is for you to use weights that allow you to do 10 or more reps during your workout and maintain a very strict diet. 20 pounds roughly 3 months is not hard at all to obtain as long as you stay strict on your diet.

10 lb dumbells is not heavy for a male. Bodybuilders tend to use heavier weights and do fewer reps. At 10 lb/40 reps, you're increasing endurance and are becoming fit with longer leaner muscles, but you're not building bulk.
What your trainer is doing is the right thing in terms of your goal of losing weight. If you did 30 or 40 lb dumbells, you'd pack on more muscle mass and muscle weight.

Just look at the mirror for results, not your weight. You can have a nicer and toned body by just loosing 10 lbs. Lets say -15 lbs from body fat, +5 from muscle mass. Muscles burn calories day and night. More muscles you have more calories you burn while you sleep or train. If dont want any muscle mass just do cardio.

Muscles dont give you a bulked up look that you are scared of,
and just loosing body fat wont give you a toned look that you dreamed of.

You wont pack on any muscle mass unless you train in 4-15 rep range. Dont be afraid of bulking up. Its not that easy...

Assuming you're a woman from your screen name, then no you can't bulk up. Women have about 1/3 less testosterone than men and more estrogen, so unless you're taking some sort of growth hormone or anabolic steroid you won't get bulky. You'll get lean. 10lb dumbbells @ 40 reps will do more for increasing stamina than building muscle.
