I want to start drinking protein shakes, but I want to choose the correct one for my needs!
I don't want to put weight on, I just want to gain a bit of extra muscle.
I do weights between 2-4 times a week & I run 2-3 times a week.

Cheers ;)

Your body does not care where the protein comes from - entrecot steak, earthworm omelette, smoked salmon, nuts, or even a protein shake.
Your body does care that you get a complete range of amino acids (the components of proteins) - especially the 8 called essential amino acids which your body must get from food (the others can be made by altering those you have eaten).
The best source of a full range of all the amino acids is meat.
Look on the container of a protein shake - do you really want those additives? Does it contain all the amino acids you need?

Another consideration is that you only need between 40 and 55 grams/day according to the Vegetarian Society (see reference).
Amino acids from protein in excess of requirements are metabolised; deamination (second reference) produces an amine group which enters the urea cycle and an oxoacid group which enters the TCA cycle so generates ATP.
Overall then, there is no point in eating too much expensive protein, nor bodybuilders and the like consuming protein shakes, since the excess is converted into urea (lost in urine) and into energy (ATP). Further, if the energy is not needed at that time then instead of being respired (to ATP) it is converted into adipose tissue - fat.
You could get fat if you eat too much protein.
What's wrong with a normal, delicious, healthy, balanced diet?

Protein drinks are a great way to supplement your workouts. If you want to put on muscle keep your weight work outs to around 45 mins per session and ease up on the running. Try to eat a good balanced diet and you should be fine. Weight is not the important measure just look in the mirror and see the improvements.

The whey protein I use comes in a large can from Walmart for $ 11. Contains 30 servings. One scoop = 100 cals, low carb. Mix with 1 cup skim milk = total of 200 cals per drink, or mix with water for 100 cals.
Sometimes I mix it with no fat plain yoghurt, but that's a matter of taste. Haven't noticed weight gain as a result of the powder mix.

. Muscle weighs heavier than fat, so by putting on muscle you will increase your weight! that is why you should monitor your BMI (Body Mass Indicator). eg a woman who increases her muscle size can increase in weight but reduce her dress size by 2!! It is better to be leaner than lighter. You can purchase "Fat body Monitors" quite cheaply now. The best protein drinks on the market at the moment is a powder which you can mix with any fluid and is called "Creatine".

protein drinks are ok for people who are exercising, still be careful not to drink too much, that can cause health issues.
the one I use is Protein Delight, it has the best taste from all I guess...

try finding one which is pure protein containing less fats and carbohydrates, myoplex and optimum nutrition are good.
go to bodybuilding.com in the store section you will find all the brands and their contents , they also arrange them in any order you want; best selling, highest content of proteins, lowest in fats, price.
