I am trying to dress in a more modest fashion and am just curious if this was your own personal choice of if it was decided for you.

Thanks for the responses. I have no problem with it. I am just wondering about it and actually admiring your faith and conviction. We have different faiths but the same intentions...to serve our God.

I chose to wear the hijab. it's sad because my parents were against it because they feared I would get harrassed.

but because it is a commandment of God, I knew i had to do it.

and i looooooove it! you feel so dignified after you wear it, and you feel like your a pearl, where you only open to a select few to see your beauty. it's truely one of the greatest blessings for Muslim Women of all time.

Islam is there to protect us, and how true that has proven to be!

You dont judge a car because of its driver. Because many at times, the driver screws up the car by going beyond limits.

Similarly, dont judge Islam by looking at the bad practices done by some muslims. We all are human bound to do a sin.

Islam is the only religion that asks the men to do'Hijab' before commanding the women. Puzzled? Hijab means to lower one's gaze when encountering a person of opposite sex.

The Quran commanded men first and then to the women. Now the question is why do Muslim women wear the 'hijab'?

How can you call yourself modest by baring your body???

The answer is simple. You take extra care for any possesion that is of a high value to you. By Hijab, Islam gives a protection to women. All major sins like rape, fornication & molestaton can be avoided if women dress sensibly.

It has been confirmed by many doctors that man has a greater drive towards sex, and he gets easily provoked. So Islam prevents the further developments by asking first to the men to lower their gaze and then commanding the women to wear Hijab that will protect lustfull gazes from falling on them.

As regarding the face. The hijab is complete, covering everything yet there is permission for leaving the face uncovered. Certain scholars hold teh viewpoint that due to the present situation of the world, wherein sins have been on the rampage, even the face should be covered.

I'm not a muslim woman, but I was very curious to see how many positive responses the question would get.
I see a couple of not-so-sure responses from a couple of younger women, and I think one, from an older woman, raised in her faith. The rest seem to be either from men who are defending the practice, or from people who don't seem to really know an awful lot about it.
It does puzzle me, however, why any woman living in the United States would deliberately CHOOSE to be a muslim. I wanted to use this forum to state, briefly, that in this country, at least, you do have the freedom to CHOOSE for yourself, whether to be a Muslim, Jew, Christian...Hindu, Buddhist, Tao...Wiccan, even Satanist, if you wish...we have a constitutionally gauranteed RIGHT to choose our own ways of worshipping. Heck, you can even choose to be an atheist, if you like. NOBODY can force you to stay in ANY religion you don't choose for yourself, no, not even your family. Your father cannot kill you for leaving...in this country, we call that murder, and it is a capital crime, carrying very heavy penalties, even to the death penalty in many states.
LOL, I did say "briefly", didn't I? Well, one more comment, and then I'll close. I am one who sat in shock and watched as women were herded into a field and shot down while men watched cheering. America is not perfect, not by any means...but, at least so far, I can safely say that this sort of outrage cannot happen here. Here, girls, you are NOT PROPERTY. Worship as you choose, wear what you like, and yes, choose your own husband...you can even divorce him...YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE!!

i do not cover my hair, which is my own choice. i am muslim, in a muslim family, and everyone respects it. while there are some families that are stricter, and require their daughters to cover their hair, most women choose to do it themselves. it is an important part of the religion to be modest and not tempt people. i think its cool that you are trying to dress modest because as a muslim teenager, sometimes i feel like im the only one who actually wears real clothes. good for you for making that choice. i promise you it will make you feel good about yourself.

I decided myself, although all the female in my family don't wear hijab, and I really enjoy it, because I'm doing it for my God.

I happened to see a nice article by a Japanese woman about hijab, you can read it if you like :)

Religious affairs are decided by th God not by ourselves ... for example christians are ordered not have alcohal and pork ...its not their choice ....but do they follow it ???? thats the question..
So whats the big deal if a woman is ordered to wear hijab ?? now its her choice if she follows it or not... but she has to be answerable to God ..as would be every person ....

They love that because it is as an ID for them, and they please God because they obey Him. Yvonne Ridley a British journalist recently converted to Islam started to wear hijab and feels good.
