Religion / spirituality in themselves are fine - it's just people's utter inability to believe what they want to believe and allow other people to do the same that's the problem - unfortunately the whole "faith" aspect of religion (ie: believing in something without any proof that anyone else would view as concrete) does tend to promote the dogmatic "with us or against" us attitude that has been used as an excuse for nearly all of the most barbaric acts of war and genocide we have seen in the last 3000 years of human history. So to answer - although I don't beleive you would eradicate conflict entirely without religion, I think religion makes conflict happen much more readily, so yes the world would be better off without it! And in answer to the people who have said there'd be no hope or purpose without faith/spirituality - I think it's a sign of weakness to need religion to make your life feel worthwhile. Life can be beautiful and meaningful without a pre-determined theological template to wrap around it. The guy who submitted above me is a great example of just how nuts people can be about this sort of thing - his attitude is only a few steps away from "I did it cos God told me to...!".

I most certainly don't. I know where you're coming from though, dude. You can't see how all these people can jsut blindly believe in something so ridiculous without questioning it even a little bit. So much so that every day you see so many stupid examples of religion getting in the way of progress. I felt the same way for the longest time until I actually thought things through.
Religion doesn't just teach us how to live peaceful, fulfilled lives. Religion is the real deal, and is God's formula for success. Religion is the thread that holds the kingdom of God together, by maintaining a faithful population and avoiding unnecessary powerstruggles. Our world as you know it might have been better off without formal religion, but we don't exist to live in pain and fear. What we know to be going on IS part of the grand plan, although it is probably the shittiest part of the plan.
The people who farm only need to know that God needs them to farm and never worry about anything else, because HE will be taking care of the important things like discovering new planets and building them from the bottom up to support life. After the old world spirals into oblivion and burns up he will take those who were still loyal to him with him off of the rock, while all the others will be left behind.
You just don't even know the half of it, man.

how can we tell? every culture at the moment has a religion or belief or something along those lines, and even atheists believe in no god. so if there was no religion then surely you would be believing in nothing? maybe religion is just an answer to everything that science cannot explain so is it so bad? it would be better to still have religions, but (oh god this is going to sound cheesy) live in peace and harmony (and all i want is world peace, sorry i just had to get that in there) and respect eachother's beliefs rather than dispute them and cause war after war after war. would that not be better?

Oh, yes it would be. Consider the scientific advances that have occurred in the past 200 years. Now tack 1800 years onto that. After the Christians destroyed the Library in Alexandria and stripped the curator so the flails would tear her flesh better around 100 AD, they sent us into the darkest and least progressive part of human history. Without religion we would have had 2000 years of scientific progress behind us.

I hate to say it but yes. More spirituality, less formal religion.
It's sad because the whole point of religion is to teach us to lead decent honourable lives but a lot of people use it as an excuse to kill.

Yes, all the church wants to do is to control people and hold back science so that we can all live in the dark ages. The church has always been against scientists and academics and it is despite religious people that scientific advances have been made and not with their help.
