Light gossip is normal, no matter where you go. Those who have no life engage in it incessantly. Those who have a lot going on for themselves (who have a life) and are relatively stable and secure in themselves will hardly take notice of the gossip and rarely be affected by it.

There is gossip everywhere and it is a mighty dangerous thing. Small towns just seem worse because everybody knows everybody. Did you ever play that game where you get a bunch of people and start whispering something in the next person's ear and then they do the same until the original statement got all the way around the group? The last person to hear it says what they heard out loud and the statement is never the same as it was when it started. That's what happens with gossip. It's ugly.

I believe there is more gossip in large cities than in small towns. Look at Los Angeles for example. But yes, I moved to a small town in a small community 2 years ago and it's like a soap opera.

of course there is, and esp in a small town. If you are new to a small town and come from a city, the people in the small town start talking about you just because they really don't know who you are or what all you have done in your life. People in a small town feel secure in knowing all the locals that have lived there all their lives, but feel insecure about someone they don't know. There fore that is when the rumors start; people drawing their own conculusions.Sad but true.

Having only lived in small towns for most of my life, I can only answer through my own experience(s)...
If you have made the effort required to get out and know your neighbors you will be the topic of pleasant conversation... If you have not made even a teeny tiny effort, then people will have to just draw their own conclusions about you. (This too surfaces as the good the bad and the ugly)- People are people, and as such, have a need to know their neighbors; most especially in a small town.
They want to know why you chose their town? They want to know your criminal background. They will just want to know what kind of neighbor you will be.
The bottom line is why do you care in the first place?
My favorite plaque is posted down at Wouters Front, and it says "THERE IS NOT MUCH TO SEE IN A SMALL TOWN; BUT WHAT YOU HEAR MAKES UP FOR THAT"...
So true...
Get out there, and meet your neighbors, and not only one or two of them... Go to a local meeting place- churches, restaurants etc- Rub your elbows and toot your own horn- You will not only feel more comfortable, you will make a lifetime of friends!
Hope this answers your question!
Be good, take care, and be a great neighbor.
Anne

I have lived here for years and THEY think I am weird. It is
THEM that's weird. THOSE that think along those lines belong with THEY & THEM. To answer you question, I think it is They Them And Those in a small town who are incessantly gossiping.
